CĂTĂLIN VELEA

Cătălin Velea (born in 1997)  graduated with a master degree in Sculpture at National University of Arts Bucharest in 2021. His practice consists of three dimensional objects in which Velea combines different materials and techniques. Interested in matter and materiality, Velea`s favorite still remains the flesh which he looks for in most mediums. Flexible, soft chunks of sponge are tensioned trough sewing to embody the memory of a touch.

Pushed by themes like childhood and manhood  he creates ambiguous objects; boneless bodies, portraits that vary from angelic to grotesque, pieces of clothing, all locking both internal and material tension; nor sculptures, nor toys, yet fully powered by several nostalgia shots, alienation and questions about identity. 

Velea `s universe is introverted and gender fluid.
